Repetitive Strain Injuries Review


This book provides information on RSI that includes alternative treatments, in contrast to (or to complement, I should say) Pascarelli/Quilter’s standard-med emphasis. The difficulty in treating RSI has prompted a great deal of interest in alternative therapies.

I think the real strength of what Dr. Tim has written is his emphasis on an interdisciplinary treatment approach. In contrast to consulting a single practitioner who may have limited perspective and treatment preferences, Dr. Tim advocates for a team effort that *includes* standard medical professionals but brings in other practices such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, and others. Also, I think the book gives a decent basic rundown on the physiology of RSI, and includes good rehab information. While I consider some of the therapies presented here to be very questionable, at a minimum you will learn what each method claims to achieve for you from a writer who is not trying to sell one of them over! the other but hopes to draw something from each.

Repetitive Strain Injuries Overview

Carpal tunnel syndrome – computer wrist – is only the best known of 15 different types of repetitive strain injury, resulting from the constant performance of the same motion. Hundreds of thousands of workers suffer from the complaint. Computer programmers, factory workers and musicians are some of those who suffer work-related injuries to the neck, shoulders, forearm, wrist, hand, finger and thumbs. Dr. Jameson, a chiropractor specializing in RSI, offers first aid strategies, tells how to determine when professional help is needed, and provides alternative approaches to halt or reverse RSI.

Repetitive Strain Injuries Specifications

They go by many names–tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, forearm tendinitis–but these injuries all have a common origin: our work and play. Whether it’s computer programming, carpentry, food service, or bookkeeping, many jobs today require people to hunch over into unnatural positions and then perform the same tiny movements over and over again throughout a workday. And the sports we pursue often aren’t much better–tennis, golf, and racquetball all involve repeated elbow- and back-straining movements.

The solution, author Timothy Jameson says, is not to exclude any potential treatment: medication, physical therapy, massage, chiropractic care, or acupuncture. A problem like carpal tunnel syndrome could be rooted in multiple factors–occupation, weight, stress, disease (including diabetes), previous injuries–and, chances are, no one discipline can find and treat all of them. Jameson also recommends making dietary changes, shifting to a
Zone-type diet of 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat, mostly from unsaturated or polyunsaturated sources.

Repetitive Strain Injuries is about as user-friendly and complete a book as one can imagine. For example, early in the book, Jameson includes anatomical charts pinpointing areas of pain or abnormal sensations, and shows which chapters to turn to for information about them. Also helpful is the menu of alternative treatments, from chiropractic care to lesser-known movement techniques such as Feldenkrais, and biofeedback and guided imagery. –Lou Schuler

Before we delve into rotator cuff therapy versus surgery, lets look at what a rotator cuff is and how individuals, particularly athletes, incur such injury or ailment.

What Is Rotator Cuff?

The rotator cuff is composed of four separate and distinct muscles that stems from the shoulder blade area. These muscles are combined with their respective tendons to create a covering or a cushion for the shoulder socket. Remember, the human shoulder is a joint, a ball and socket joint to be exact. And it is the muscle-tendon organization of the rotator cuff that allows us to freely twist, move, and rotate our arms.

Causes of Injury

A rotator cuff injury is normally attributed to either natural wear and tear or due to excessive force or weight placed upon the shoulders. Individuals reaching their prime are prone to the former, while athletes are often times linked to the latter cause. Whether it be general deterioration or sports-related shoulder injury, sometimes the pain is unbearable so rotator cuff therapy is required.

Healing Process

Just like any ailment, it is difficult to pinpoint the precise moment when the problem will cease. An ordinary person who suffers from rotator cuff injury may opt to heal the same with the help of time. The body can heal itself, but the process can be long and oftentimes limited. Athletes may choose to hire a physical therapist.

Non-Surgical Approach

If you take the non-surgical approach, expect a rotator cuff therapy that includes isometrics (static exercises), varying degrees of stretching, and some advance sessions that will incorporate modest weight lifting. If you plan to perform exercises on you own, make certain you do not strain yourself. If your work out regimen causes more pain, it is advised you stop and visit your physician immediately.

Surgical Approach

There are times where the tear is so severe the only treatment is surgery. One procedure is arthroscopic surgery where the bone spurs and the inflamed tissue surrounding the shoulder are removed. The success rate of this procedure is high and those that undergo the surgery are able to function as well as their pre-injury performance. The downside, this costs a lot!

So which rotator cuff therapy is right for you? That depends on the severity of the injury. Consult with your doctor who will be able to diagnose your problem and advise you on the best options for getting your shoulder problems resolved.

Abstract: Golf is an asymmetric sport with unique patterns of injury depending upon the skill level. Higher handicap players typically experience injuries that result from swing mechanics, whereas lower handicap and professional players have overuse as the major cause of their injuries. The majority of shoulder injuries affecting golfers occur in the nondominant shoulder. Common shoulder injuries include subacromial impingement, rotator cuff pathology, glenohumeral instability, and arthritis involving the acromioclavicular and/or glenohumeral joints. Lead arm elbow pain resulting from lateral epicondylosis (tennis elbow) is the leading upper extremity injury in amateur golfers. Tendon injury is the most common problem seen in the wrist and forearm of the golfer. Rehabilitation emphasizing improvement in core muscle streng is important in the treatment of golf injury. Emerging treatments for tendinopathy include topical nitrates, ultrasound-guided injection of therapeutic substances, and eccentric rehabilitation. There is evidence supporting physiotherapy, and swing modification directed by a teaching professional, for treatment of upper extremity golf injuries. This article focuses on upper extremity injuries in golf, including a discussion of the epidemiology, causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of injuries occurring in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand.

This book has been really helpful to me as an athlete. I don’t have any background in medicine or anatomy. However, as a runner I have dealt with countless injuries to the feet, ankles, legs, knees, etc. Over time, I’ve been given lots of advice and suggestions on treatment of injuries.
